I’ve covered the best parties I gave for my daughter, so I’d like to continue to give you good advice - and because it’s from an armchair there’s an excellent chance I’ll avoid my usual disaster when going overboard!
When I was newly wed and giving adult dinner parties (where have they gone?) my mother-in-law brought a gift with her to the first one. I was so excited to receive her Staffordshire Boar, in use for decades at her table, meant to be parked near the centerpiece and ready to be used if someone tried to hog the conversation. One would gently pick up the Boar and place it in front of the overly enthusiastic dinner guest, getting the message across with good humour. It always worked. I was reminded of this tradition when I stumbled across the wonderful website HousesandParties created by another overboard-ish woman, Rebecca Gardner.
A serendipitous detail we have in common is a love for marbled paper (featured on HousesandParties) which you can see behind the Boar and next to a favorite prognosticator, The Magic Eight Ball.
